Podcasts
MixMusic finds and plays podcasts from YouTube Music and Spotify, follows shows, and starts each episode where you left it, here or on another device.
YouTube Music's podcasts play with no account. Spotify's play from Spotify itself, which needs Spotify Premium.
Find shows and episodes
Search for a show or an episode, then choose the Podcasts pivot of the results. It shows the shows found as tiles, then the episodes found, each with its show's name. The services choice above the results keeps both services, only Spotify's or only YouTube Music's. MixMusic asks the services for podcasts only once you open the pivot.
- A show's tile opens its page. Its play button plays the episode you left partway, or else the newest one. Its menu has Open, Play and Copy link.
- An episode's row plays it, with the episodes after it in the list: double-click the row, or click its cover.
A show's page
- The head: the show's cover, its authors, how many episodes it has, and its description, with these buttons:
- Play, which plays the newest episode, or Resume, when you left an episode of the show partway, which plays it from where you left it;
- Follow, or Following once you follow the show: see Following shows;
- More, with Open on its service and Copy link.
- The episodes, the newest first, each with its cover, its title, the day it came out (as "Oct 26", with the year when it isn't this one), its length, and how much of it is left ("12 min left"), or "played".
- Load more episodes, at the foot, reads the next page of them.
A Spotify show's page says so when Spotify tracks play from YouTube Music: Spotify's podcasts play only from Spotify, so choose In MixMusic, from Spotify or On Spotify Connect in Settings › Playback.
An episode's menu
An episode's menu, from its … button or a right click, has Play, Play next and Add to queue, Add to liked songs, Dislike and Add to mix, Go to podcast, which opens its show, and Mark as played or Mark as unplayed. Open in its service and Copy link follow. Episodes don't start radios, and they don't download.
Following shows
Follow a show with Follow on its page.
- Signed in to its service, following saves the show there too: on YouTube Music or on Spotify. Signed out, MixMusic keeps it on its own.
- A show you saved on the service, as in another profile or on your phone, says Following on its page, and Following stops following it there too.
- Library › Podcasts lists:
- Keep listening: the episodes you left partway, with how much is left of each;
- Following: the shows you follow in MixMusic;
- Saved on Spotify and Saved on YouTube Music: the shows saved on each service you signed in to, past those you follow here.
Where you left off
MixMusic keeps where you left each episode, so that it starts there the next time, on its own or from the queue.
- It starts a little before: an episode plays from 5 seconds before where you left it, to pick up the sentence.
- What it keeps: nothing for the first 15 seconds of an episode, and an episode within 2 minutes of its end, or the last 3% of a short one, counts as played. MixMusic keeps the places of your latest 500 episodes.
- Whatever played before: an episode played from its show's page starts where you left it, in MixMusic or on another device, whatever the queue before it was at.
- Moving within an episode, as Previous does after its first seconds, starts it again; it never jumps back to where you left it.
- Mark as played and Mark as unplayed, in an episode's menu, change what MixMusic keeps.
Episodes play one after another without a crossfade, and the next one's audio isn't fetched ahead. A queue that ends on an episode stops, rather than start a radio.
With YouTube Music
Signed in to YouTube Music, MixMusic and YouTube Music go on from each other's place:
- From your phone: an episode starts where you left it on another device, when that's newer than where you left it in MixMusic. One you finished there starts from its start.
- To your phone: while an episode plays, MixMusic tells YouTube Music how far you got, as YouTube Music's own player does, so that YouTube Music on your phone goes on from there.
- The switch: "Add what you play to your history", in Settings › Accounts, governs this too. Turned off, or signed out, nothing goes to YouTube Music.
Spotify's episodes
- They play only from Spotify, with "How Spotify tracks play" in Settings › Playback set to In MixMusic, from Spotify (on Windows) or On Spotify Connect, either of which needs Spotify Premium. YouTube Music has no recording of them.
- Where you left them: Spotify tells MixMusic where you left an episode on another device. A sign-in to Spotify made before MixMusic had podcasts doesn't allow it: sign in to Spotify again once, in Settings › Accounts.
- Speed: Spotify plays its episodes at their own speed, so the speed button is dimmed while one plays.
Episode details and chapters
Where a song shows its lyrics, an episode shows its details: in the side panel, which then says Details (the same button by the player, or Ctrl+Shift+L), and on the now playing page, under the player.
- What they show: the show, which opens its page, the views, the day the episode came out and its length, then its whole description.
- Times in the description, as 12:34 or 1:02:03, play the episode from there.
- Links open in your browser.
- Chapters: lines that start or end with a time are chapters, and the chapter that plays lights up as the episode goes on. On a MacBook with a notch, the notch player shows it, with the chapters before and after it.
- Where they come from: YouTube Music's Details tab, or Spotify, asked for the first time they show, and kept: a refresh doesn't ask again.
Speed
Podcasts have a speed of their own, apart from songs': Podcasts, in Settings › Playback › Speed, 1× at first. Episodes play at it, and songs at theirs.
While an episode plays, the speed button by the player, the command palette's Speed up, Slow down and Normal speed, and the rate the system's media controls set change the podcasts' speed, and a toast says "Podcasts play at" the speed. The button's menu has steps from 0.75× to 2× and a slider from 0.5× to 3×, at the episode's own pitch. Playing music has the rest.
Not counted
Episodes don't scrobble to Last.fm, and the stats leave them out. The history keeps them.
